Minnesota -New! Advanced Practice Esthetics Rules and Licenses

Rules for the new advanced practice esthetician (AP) licenses went into effect on September 24, 2018. The existing scope of practice for estheticians and cosmetologists is now split into two parts - esthetics and advanced practice ("AP") esthetics. One major change is that any cosmetologist or esthetician who offers AP services will need a new license by August 1, 2019!

General Rule Changes

The Minnesota Board of Cosmetology adopted new rules which went into effect on September 24, 2018. Although most of the rule changes are about the new advanced practice esthetician license, there are also important new rules for every licensee. The new rules include changes related to infection control, using new products or equipment, providing new services, and applying for salon manager licenses, among other items. 

Single Salon License Type

We have changed to a single salon license type. Instead of having three specific salon license types (cosmetologist, esthetician and nail technician) and adding eyelash technician salon licenses, all licensed salons in Minnesota will carry a "Salon License" with no specific service-type designation.
